Bringing it Back to Baseball
Season opener on 2/22: CDS’s Varsity baseball team opens up their season against Brooks Debartolo at home. Junior pitcher Andre R. completely shut down Brooks by throwing five shutout innings, he also earned player of the game. Sophomore pitcher Logan B. also came in to pitch as he threw two innings to shut Brooks down. The defense behind Andre was great and there was just enough of offensive production for CDS to get the win. All the work put in over the summer, fall, winter, and now early spring has paid off for the baseball team. This was a great team win as CDS won 4-0.
2/24: CDS baseball traveled to Admiral Farragut in Clearwater. CDS completely blew out Admiral as they were winning 20-0 by the third inning. Freshman pitcher Gabe T. threw two innings with two strikeouts and let the defense work behind him. Junior pitcher Jaxon G. came in to throw in the last inning. He pitched one inning and closed out a game where it was very lopsided. CDS won 24-1.
2/28: CDS played SLAM at home. In the second inning CDS put up six runs and got off to a 6-0 lead. In the third inning SLAM responded by scoring five runs, and by the fourth inning SLAM was right around the corner from tying the game. Freshman pitcher Nick R. pitched 2 2/3 innings with five strikeouts, but gave up three earned runs and two others came unearned. Nick R.’s Curveball was really good and it was a big pitch in his arsenal. Logan B. pitched 3 ⅓ innings letting his defense work behind him. To close the game Gabe T. came in and shut the door as he pitched one inning with one strikeout. CDS won 10-7 in another great team win.
3/2: CDS played Clearwater Central Catholic at home.Logan M. started on the bump. The game was scoreless through three innings as it was a pitcher’s duel. CDS scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to give themselves a 2-0 lead. After four shutdown innings, Logan M. was taken out as he only gave up two hits. The offense didn’t put up any runs. In the top of the sixth inning, Clearwater Central Catholic scored a run to make it a 2-1 game. CDS was held again so all they had to do was hold CCC and they would win. Brennan L. shut the door in the bottom of the seventh and CDS would go on to win 2-1 and keep a four game winning streak alive.
3/3: CDS played Academy at the Lakes away. This is going to be CDS’s biggest test of the season. CDS scored a run at the top of the first inning to give themselves a 1-0 lead. Gabe T. was on the bump for CDS. In the bottom of the first inning one earned run came across and another run came unearned. Academy had a 2-1 lead after the first inning. In the second inning Gabe T. went 1-2-3 and gave himself a quick pick me up inning. In the third inning Gabe T put up another zero. Gabe T. was done after three innings, striking out three and walking four. Jaxon G was put in the game for relief. He got one out before Academy was up 4-2. Freshman pitcher Matt P. came in to clean up the mess. Before CDS knew it, Academy was up 6-2. CDS couldn’t find any offense and Academy gave CDS their first loss of the season. CDS lost 6-2. As coach Tony said, “no gimmies, everything earned CDS didn’t earn this game tonight.
